Apprentice electrician Gracie Donaghy has beaten more than 3,000 apprentices from across the UK and Ireland to be crowned one of two champions at this year’s Screwfix Trade Apprentice competition

For the first time in the award’s history, two apprentices took home the title, with apprentice stonemason Petra O’Flaherty also named as a winner.

Gracie, aged 22 from Bridgwater, Somerset, is a third-year electrical apprentice studying at Weston College. And despite being encouraged to go to university, it was a conversation with her dad about hands-on careers that sparked her passion for the trade.

Since starting her apprenticeship, Gracie has taken part in several apprentice open days organised by her employer as well as starting her own TikTok channel where she regularly hosts Q&As and shares hints and tips for others considering an apprenticeship.

One of two winners, Gracie takes home an impressive prize bundle of tools, training and technology worth £10,000 – while also scooping £2,000 worth of Screwfix vouchers for her college.

During the two-day final, which took place at Google HQ in London, UK, Gracie impressed the panel of industry judges, including representatives from Screwfix, the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC), the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), and the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), with her passion and dedication to the trade.

Commenting on the announcement, Gracie said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have been named Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2026. Having started my apprenticeship only a few years ago, it’s an incredible honour to be recognised alongside so many talented apprentices.

“Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve seen first-hand how important role models are, and I love sharing my experience and helping others to explore their options via my TikTok channel, I honestly believe there’s an apprenticeship out there for everyone.”

Sarah Howell, Director of Marketing Communications for Screwfix, said: “Every year we say choosing a winner gets more difficult, and this year was no different, so much so we chose two. Gracie and Petra are shining examples of what apprenticeships are all about – getting inspiring and passionate new talent into the industry. I’ve no doubt both will leave a lasting impression on their respective trades.

“Gracie’s enthusiasm for her trade is infectious, and I’m sure it will inspire others thinking of starting their apprenticeship journey. Gracie’s commitment to going the extra mile is already clear to see, including how she approached the task set for the finalists, where she went above and beyond to make a working prototype of her tool idea.

“Their trades are lucky to have them, and we are excited to see where this accolade takes them both in their careers. Congratulations, Gracie and Petra!”

The Screwfix Trade Apprentice award celebrates the best new talent in the trade industry, and this year’s competition received more than 3,000 entries.
